Davis All-Stars Win the 1965 Pro Bowl
The 1964 Odyssey Football League Pro Bowl was played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii in warm weather with a light rain falling. The "Termite Palace" was packed to rafters with the locals wanting a high-scoring offensive shootout. Instead they got a defensive of titanic proportions. In the end the Al Davis Conference All-Stars caused six turnovers and defeated the Pete Rozelle Conference All-Stars 17-10. After a scoreless first quarter the Al Davis All-Stars got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when PR Mel Renfro went 80 yards for a touchdown. K Wayne Walker added the extra point. Davis All-Stars 7 Rozelle All-Stars 0. For the remainder of the first half both defenses made big stops and/or caused turnovers. Then with a little more than four minutes left in the first-half the Rozelle All-Stars went on an 11 play 85 yard scoring drive. The drive ended when QB Fran Tarkenton hit WR Paul Warfield with a 5-yard pass on a quick slant in the end zone. K Gino Cappelletti added the extra point tying the game at 7 aside at halftime. The Davis All-Stars wasted little time putting points on the board to start the second half taking the kickoff and driving for a 23-yard field goal by K Wayne Walker. Al Davis All-Stars 10 Pete Rozelle All-Stars 7. The rest of the third quarter was a defensive battle with both offenses struggling to get anything going. Finally in the fourth quarter Al Davis All-Stars QB Johnny Unitas put a drive together that ended with him running into the end zone from eleven yards out. With K Wayne Walker's point after the score was now the Al Davis All-Stars 17 Pete Rozelle All-Stars 7. Not only was the Davis All-Stars defense making life miserable for the Rozelle All-Stars the game clock was against them as well. With a little more than ten minutes remaining in the game the Rozelle All-Stars needed two scores and one had to be a touchdown. Rozelle All-Stars QB Fran Tarkenton - getting more playing time than starting QB Charley Johnson who had tossed five interceptions - threw caution to the wind and aired it out putting together a 13 play 56 yard drive that stalled out and ended with a 24-yard K Gino Cappelletti field goal. Davis All-Stars 17 Rozelle All-Stars 10. That was the last scoring effort for the Rozelle All-Stars. The Davis All-Stars all but ran out the clock and then squashed the last second desperation throws by Rozelle All-Stars QB Fran Tarkenton to possibly tie up the game. At the post-game ceremony Davis All-Stars CB-PR Mel Renfro was named the games MVP.
